FAQ for Tutors
Q. How do I register?
Registration is free for all users of TutorHost. On the Home page, select the register tab, click on the “sign up as a tutor” button and complete the application form.
Q. I have forgotten my username and/or password.
Password reset instructions can be found on the ‘tutor page’ of TutorHost. Select “forgot my password/username”, then follow the instructions to reset your password as a tutor.
Q. Who sees my personal information?
Your first name will be used on your public profile. Your personal details will not be shared on your public profile; it will only be visible to students who have paid TutorHost the finder’s fee.
Q. Do I need a CRB/DBS/Police record check?
TutorHost does not make having such checks mandatory, and your profile will still be visible to students if you do not have a CRB/DBS/Police record. However, these checks and safeguards will add value to your profile, making it more appealing to a wider range of students.
Q. How do I get a CRB/DBS/Police record check?
TutorHost will not be able to conduct a DBS/CRB check on your behalf; however you may be able to access one through your employer if employed. If you have a current DBS/CRB certificate please upload it to your profile.
Q. Do we accept all CRB/DBS/Police record checks?
Currently, we will only be able to accept police checks from the UK, in order for this to be added to your profile. (However, please note that your profile will still be active or visible to students without these checks).
Q. Who can contact me?
Please verify age with students when they contact you and ensure that students who are under the age of 18 receive consent from an adult nominee before messaging you.
Q. How do I edit my profile?
Log in to TutorHost from the home screen. In your tutor account, click on the “edit profile” button. There, you can change or add subjects, edit your rates and availability for students.
Q. How do I add documents to my profile?
Use the “Edit profile” button to upload documents such as QTS qualifications or CRB records to complete your profile.
Q. How is my data protected?
Information such as qualifications and CRB certificates can only be viewed by the admin team at TutorHost, please refer to our data protection and privacy policy for more information.
Q. How do I deactivate or hide my profile?
If your availability changes, and you are unable to offer tuition, you can remove or hide your profile in your account page. In the “Edit profile” menu of your account, select “deactivate” or “hide profile”. This will temporarily remove your profile from the list of tutors displayed on TutorHost. If / when you become available for tutoring, you can sign into your profile and use the same functions to unhide your profile.
Tutor Tips
Be aware of the learning needs of your student.
Find out if students have any special educational needs and a support plan with the way they prefer to learn. If the student does not have a support plan, develop learning plans to support these needs during tutoring.
Set affordable competitive rates
Offering tuition both online and face to face has become very competitive. As TutorHost charges NO COMMISSION to tutors, to enable you to attract the desired number of students, it is advised to offer affordable rates that will enable you to stand out from your competitors.
Show as much detailed information as possible on your profile
It has been proven that providing as much information as possible such as current DBS and teaching qualifications will add value to your profile. It is important to show students that you are competent and knowledgeable with proven expertise. Show clearly the specifications that you are experienced in delivering, e.g. AQA, Edexcel, IB; whether you have been an examiner in the past, are information that will highlight your expertise. Therefore, try to have a completed profile that sell your qualifications, years of teaching experience and skills, to enable you to attract students.
Encourage students to leave positive reviews
The review function shows the level of student satisfaction and acts as your personal referral. Encourage students to leave positive reviews which will be visible to all prospective students, enabling you to be more competitive.
Be consistent, always be prepared for lessons.
Ensure you are prepared and ready for each lesson on the date and time agreed with the student, with the necessary resources and materials for the class. Prepare teaching aids with the right level of scaffolding and stretch tasks to enable progress to be maximized in your lesson. Follow up with students after lessons through homework and support with revision to build trusting relationships. Maintain active communication with your students.
Use a platform that is dependable and user friendly.
As online learning becomes a part of the norm, one of the benefits of TutorHost is that teachers and students decide together on where learning takes place. Therefore, for online lessons, you and the student will choose the platform that you are most comfortable with. Therefore, ensure the platform selected is dependable and user friendly.
Safeguarding responsibilities
As stated in our safeguarding policy, please do not share social media connections with students under the age of 18 years. If there is a safeguarding concern, please refer to our policy.
Do not engage students under 18 years old without parental consent, please refer to our safeguarding policy. As stated in our terms and conditions, please ensure you have explicit permission from an adult nominee of a student under the age of 18 before engaging in a tutoring arrangement with that student
